Trolley Museum Projects

The Trolley Museum of New York has much it wants to accomplish! Here are the "top ten" current projects for which we are seeking support:
  1. Finish Johnstown car 358.
    The 358 restoration was put on hold when the car went into regular service in 2000. Work still needs to be done on the windows, doors and cosmetic details.
  2. Poles for Electrification.
  3. 4/O grooved wire.
  4. Rail bonding supplies.
    We want to operate our electric streetcars, but this will not be possible until we can string the overhead wire. We still need poles, copper wire and rail bonding supplies before we can begin the project. We have enough insulators and ears though, and we have a 800KW rectifier.

  5. A new building.
  6. Another new building.
    The museum has a single building on site now which houses the Visitors Center, Museum Store, rest rooms, museum offices and the restoration shop. It is very full! We need more storage. Several cars are already outside, and we want to continue to add streetcars to the collection. We can't bring in more cars until we have a place to put them! Our long term plan calls for two buildings: One will be a large car shed in the track yard area, covering 4 or 5 tracks and about 180' long. The second new building will be adjacent to the parking lot and will hold a concession stand, ticket window, rest rooms and garage.
  7. R-16 Car 6398.
    This subway car, which primarily ran on the A-line, is currently being restored. The car has undergone 600 volt testing and is expected to be one of the first cars operating when the line is electrified.
  8. Brooklyn "Peter Witt" 8361.
    This car, at one time or another, ran on every line in the extensive Brooklyn & Queens system. It needs restoration.
  9. Expanded exhibit hall.
    We would like to expand the "Visitors Center" exhibit area to accommodate a small streetcar or horse car.
  10. Enhance site appearance and security.
    We would like to replace the fence surrounding the museum site with something more fitting from the Ulster & Delaware era, such as a brick and wrought iron fence. This will enhance the appearance and security of the site.
