Kingston book

Author Patricia O'Reilly Murphy visit

The Trolley Museum of New York hosted author Patricia O'Reilly Murphy on June 15. She signed copies of her new book Kingston, released this past Spring. Signed copies of her book are still available in the museum gift shop.

The event was lightly attended, but we do hope to have future authors visiting the museum for book signings. June 2013

Thanks for a great 30 years in Kingston event!

Thanks everyone for a fantastic day on May 18. Jon McGrew kicked off the formalities at 11:30AM with a ribbon cutting for the rehabilitated track and a dedication of the cornerstone of the museum building. US Congressman Chris Gibson said a few words about how Kingston is growing as an artist community and tourist destination. Mayor Shayne Gallo then spoke of how lower Broadway and the entire waterfront is a growing area where the Trolley Museum will be a key connector for the future. Paul Barker who attended was also given special recognition for his key work in the museum's early development in Kingston. Then Congressman Gibson presented to Jon McGrew a congressional certificate commemorating the museum's anniversary.

After the ceremony, people quickly discovered the free sandwiches, sodas and cake! Free trolley rides were offered all afternoon and the band Hurley Mountain Highway performed on the stage. Under the tent we had a gift shop table and a postal service table issuing commemorative postmarks. Pictures to follow. May 2013

IBMers May 10 13 by Jeff Bisti
For the 3rd year in a row, IBM employees volunteer a day at the Trolley Museum.

IBM volunteers strike again!

30 employees of IBM volunteered on Friday, May 10 to work on a number of projects to help get the Trolley Museum ready for the season opening: Brush was cut, raised beds fixed, trucks painted, ties moved, the office was painted, and lots of other small projects. This is the third year in a row that IBM employees have volunteered a day away from work to help us. Click here for pictures.

Also in March, the museum received a check from IBM for $3000 from their Community Grant program. This is in addition to a $5000 check received from IBM in 2011.

A big thank you to IBM for all they do to help TMNY! May 2013

The Trolley Museum was in the Spotlight!

Joi Becker, Nancy Riseley, Jon McGrew, and Steve Finkle were guests on a radio show broadcast on May 5, 2013. The half-hour program, sponsored by the Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce, was broadcast on Sunday morning on several radio stations in the area. The recording is here. Tune in to hear about what the museum has planned! May 2013

Track rehabilitation status

Construction was in full swing from mid-October to mid-December last year on the $860,000 track rehab project. The project reached about 90% complete in mid-December when the work was suspended for the duration of Winter. The change is quite dramatic with all the new ties, new rail and new crossings that were installed as part of the project.

In early Spring the work will resume with completion expected by the time that museum opens for the season on May 11. The biggest single item remaining in the project is the removal of Mount Strand as we call it— this is the large pile of dirt in the museum's parking lot that was excavated from the right-of-way along East Strand. Sinterklaas on the Rondout

Thanks for a good day of operations on Nov. 24th for Sinterklaas on the Rondout. The trolley made six trips for the day at or near capacity. Be sure to visit again on December 1 & 2 for Santa Days at the Trolley Museum! Nov. 2012

Sandy's unwelcome visit

updated Frankenstorm Sandy left her mark at the Trolley Museum. Flood waters from the storm surge in the early morning hours of October 30 filled the yard and entered the museum building. Museum President Jon McGrew has a photo essay of the damage in and around the museum here.

The Trolley Museum building gets a facelift in 2010.

Cleanup at the museum started on Nov. 3 by volunteers. Outside, ties and debris were moved off of the grass and paths, leaves were gathered and bagged, picnic tables moved. Inside the building, aisles were cleared, items picked up, plywood walkways put back in place.

We're in a movie!

For the first time the Trolley Museum was a used as a location for a movie production. Producer, director, cast and crew of this post-graduate student film were here for a full day and used trolley interiors for their green-screen motion shots.

This was arranged through the Hudson Valley Film Commission which promotes movie production in the area. On the day of the shoot, the Commission listed us as their Location of the Day on Facebook. Hopefully this will be the first of many uses of the Trolley Museum as a filming location.

Location scouts—the Trolley Museum of New York is available for film and photo projects. For a personal tour, please contact us. Updated June 2012

Façade project complete

In mid-July 2010, work began on the construction of a new façade for the museum building. The plans include several improvements to building access and security, such as new interior and exterior stairs, raised doors and new windows.

The funding for this project is through a grant received from the New York Department of State administered by the City of Kingston.

The final piece of the project installed a new gutter and drainage system on the south face of the building. The project is now complete! Dec. 2010
